Buried Treasure Bandits

Today we meet Barry Billcliff, 27, of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Timothy Crebase, 22, of Methuen, Massachusetts (Dead link, see below).  Here's my rough guess at the conversation that lead up to their arrest:

TC: Dude, roofing this house isn't paying us enough.  Lets just steal these old coins and money while we're here!
BB: Yeah, we can pretend we dug it up like buried treasure in the backyard!
TC: That's cool!  We'll be like famous and stuff.
BB: Yeah, who'll ever know we stole it.
TC: Yeah.
[Fade to black as our two clueless morons crack warm 40oz. beers.]

Ordinarily an entry such as this would have likely faded into history and that dead link above would have remained just that.  But this one is no longer ordinary!  Let's start with a better and fresher link of the story.  And then we have the comment below, allegedly from Barry himself!  You might need to read it a couple of times though being literacy apparently isn't Barry's forte.  Let's hope he's a better roofer.  As for addressing his comments, I'll take that that up below (when I have the time).  Welcome back to the limelight Barry!  You should have just let the sleeping dog lie.  ;)

Words To The Wise

Words To The Wise

I've seen the wall
I've seen them fall
I've seen the light
I've seen them bend their little minds
Surrendering without a fight

I've done them all
I've done them twice
I've seen it all
Inside my mind

You think you should do it
I tell you you're wrong
You can't understand it
It's stronger than you
I hope you listen
To what I'm telling you

We have a name!

A while back in the My Job post I mentioned that the naming of my department at work was still up in the air.  The leading contenders were:
  • Quality Engineering
  • Engineering Standards & Practices
  • Engineering Standards
  • Engineering Practices
  • Jackass & Tony
After much trial and tribulation, the name "Engineering Practices" was chosen to be the winner.  What does this mean and what are the ramifications?  Doesn't really mean much other than I can now get my business cards.  My day to day responsibilities haven't changed.  It's just that we are no longer a department "to be named later".  All together now: YAWN  ;)

My GT

My GT

The trees line the road
Like soldiers in time
As we take the turn at 85

Do the cruise
Just me and you
Let it flow free
Rollin' in my GT

Rockin' down that highway
Doin' 125
Rollin' up that speed
As I shift to overdrive

'Cause we're rockin'
We're rollin'
Flying out on a line

My flash of red
Burns in the heads
Of those we're passin' by…BYE!

Gallery Update

As you probably hadn't even noticed, I upgraded the Gallery software to V1.5 about a week and a half ago.  And in typical fashion they did a nice job of changing things so as to break my existing installation layout!  From what I saw on the support forums, I wasn't alone in my unhappiness.  After doing the upgrade I did manage to get my color scheme back in short order.  But the layout was smooshed to about 1/2 its size.  After mucking around with the wrapper files I finally got my layout working again. :)

I have such a love/hate relationship with Gallery.  It's a very nice and powerful application, but it's had security problems in the past and they constantly break things during upgrades!  I really dislike the way they package things for distribution —when you unpack it, it overwrites the existing installation because they don't version label their release directory.  Then there are never any upgrade/release notes.  From what I gather from their web site you apparently are expected to keep up notes with the release candidates.  That's not very good if you only upgrade when the stable version comes out!  Ideally you should have some sort of README or UPGRADE notes file that you can read BEFORE you trash your existing installation!  Enough venting for now.  The application is getting better with every release, but they need to do a better job of preparing users for what to expect when a new release is installed.

Don’t post pictures!

I found this a bit amusing.  What can I say?  It's been a long week.

RoboForm

I don't know about you, but I think anybody that would use RoboForm has to be out of their minds!  Maybe for casual "fan site" sort of things (e.g. Slashdot), but not for serious usage.  Turn my passwords over to a third-party I don't know?  Wait, I'll have to stop laughing before I can tell you NO!
