Des Plaines River in Winter

Des Plaines River in Winter

The Des Plaines River is less than 2 miles from my parents house in Illinois.  I took this shot as far down the set of stairs to the waters edge as I could get.  Right after Christmas there was a big heat wave that melted off all of the snow, then river had swollen (the thin tree line on both sides are the banks) and then the temperature plummeted and refroze everything.  We had decided to get out and get some fresh air, thus heading down to the river for a hike seemed like a good photo op to me.  Actually the area to the right, across the river is all a large flood plain.  It's a good 1/2 mile wide and several miles long.  In any case, the river constantly floods out those living down stream from this point.  This includes yours truly as 20+ years ago I lived in a (thankfully third floor) apartment about 5 miles down stream.  There as a 500 year flood event and large parts of the neighborhood were flooded.  My complex was basically an island as off to the left here (out of frame) is one of the main rail arteries between Chicago and Milwaukee.  Thus you could only enter my neighborhood from one side.  I was actually only about 50 yards from the rail lines, but about a 1/2 mile or so from the river.  Suffice flood water goes anywhere and everywhere that's below it's surface level.
